I asked my friends that “what is your favorite search engine at this moment in time?”.You know I got the same answer from them. It’s Google -a popular search engine that helps you to find resources on the Workd Wide Web. And I also believe that you have ever used this powerful tool several times. Anybody knows that Google scans web pages to find the instances of your keywords which are entered in the search box. But what are really useful in hundreds of different results from a long list. Why do you take one hour or more to find somethings while your friends just get it in few minutes or even in seconds. This article will give you 10 tips which can help you to improve your searching with Google.

10. Use Explicit Phrase

For example, you want to find some tips about computers to read. So, in this case, instead of using just computer or tips as key works for searching, you should use a phase of words explicitly for searching. To do that, you just put simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes. Example: “computer tips”

9. Use operator to limit unexpected results

Either/or. Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator — or use the “|” symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. For example: “computer tips” OR “computer tricks”

Not. You can remove a term or phrase by using “-” symbol. For example: “computer tips” -paypal

Wildcard. The “*” symbol is a wildcard. This is useful for finding stuff which you can’t remember an exact name. For example: Java programming * beginner

8. Search results in a specific site

Sometimes you want to search a specific website for content that matches a certain phrase. Simply use the site: modifier. Example: “firefox tips” site:www.mycomputertips.net

7. Use similar words and synonyms

Let’s say you want to include a word in your search, but want to include results that contain similar words or synonyms. To do this, use the “~” in front of the word. Example: “computer tips” ~professional

6. Find specific document types

If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can use the modifier “filetype:”. For example, you want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to computer languages. Example: “computer languages” filetype:ppt

5. Stock, number ranges, area code

Just enter a valid ticker symbol as your search term and Google will give you the current financial and a quick thumb-nail chart for the stock. Example: GOOG

If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from. Example: 604

4. Use Google as a calculator

If you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the Calculator applet, you can just type your expression in to Google. Example: 5341 + 7360

3. Find word definitions

You can also use define: operator to get a quick definition for your terms. Example: define: SEO

2. Use Google as unit converter and money exchange

You can use Google for a quick conversion, from yards to meters for example, or different currency. Example: 102 meters in yards

Example: 7819 EUR in USD

1. Search images, musics, movies

Use the movie: operator to search for a movie title along with either a zip code or U.S. city and state to get a list of movie theaters in the area and show times. Example: movie: Sex and the city

The music: operator returns content related to music only

Hopefully these tips help you to improve the performance of your searches with Google. Do you know any tips which I have missed here. Feel free to share your tips in the comments.
