Mobile broadband has transformed the way we carry out our online activities, because we no longer need to sit info front of a desktop computer. Instead, it is now possible to take the internet and your email with you wherever you go.

Better still, options for mobile broadband are numerous, and due to the competitive nature of the marketplace, it is also extremely cost effective. If you use the services of a free comparison website like Broadband Genie you’ll find it’s possible to sift through all available deals and find one that’s just right for your needs.

Going mobile

Mobile broadband comes in two different variants, the pay-as-you-go option or contract. There are pros and cons for both, with PAYG being handy because you only pay for the time you are connected and there’s no contract. Signing up or a contract deal, meanwhile, often allows you greater flexibility and freedom with your online needs.

You’ll need a dongle deal to go with your mobile broadband package, as these are the small plastic USB devices that plug into a laptop or netbook in order to receive the mobile broadband signal. These come in PAYG options or contract variants, while it’s also possible to get free laptop deals too.

The latter route gets you a free computer into return for a longer contract like two years or so. At the end of the deal you get to keep the machine, although the overall costs is essentially factored in to the package, so it’s not strictly free. Nevertheless this can be a great way of getting new kit and mobile broadband at the same time.

Other options

The mobile broadband marketplace is hugely competitive and new devices are coming online all the time. Now that the smartphone is everywhere you’ll find mobile providers offering all sorts of deals and incentives for getting you to sign up to a contract deal for one of these. Alternatively, buy a PAYG smartphone then shop around for SIM only deals, which can be a good way to go.

Similarly, another hot new device is the Apple iPad, which is a tablet-style computing gadget that is both compact and powerful. You’ll need a special iPad SIM to put into one of these units, and they are unique to the Apple device. A quick look through the deals on a free comparison website like Broadband Genie will display the options, with everything from rolling one month contracts and PAYG all on offer.

And finally

Whatever route you take for getting connected to mobile broadband, be sure to check up on the terms and conditions of any deals you like the look of. There are limits on data usage in many cases, so you need to have an idea of how much data you want to download (and upload) during a specified period.

Going over limits can incur extra costs or usage penalties, while the same goes for overseas use too. Many packages won’t even work while you’re abroad and ones that do can often be very experience due to the ‘roaming’ charges imposed by mobile providers. So, the main thing with any mobile broadband deal is to do your homework and read the small print first.

Free Laptops with Mobile Broadband – Hottest deals but avoid laptop thigh syndrome

From pricing point of view, there is very little differences between price of a laptop computer on the high street and a laptop computer online. PC retailers on the High Street boast that their prices are as low as you can get from online computer deal, online retailer promise to give you online prices with High Street shopping experience. The consumer benefits from this price war and competition between traditional retailer and their much newer online competition.

One of the products where you find absolutely no differences between online and offline retailers is in the retail of Free laptops. The main reason for this is that the laptops are not free per Se because you have to take it with a bundle, usually mobile broadband or a high end smarphone. This kind of offer is becoming increasingly popular because you do not have to fork our several hundreds of pounds like you have to if you buy a laptop off the shelve outright, you can just take the bundle and pay a monthly installments payment.

One of the best destinations online when you are looking for mobile broadband deals is the website called broadband expert, as their name indicated, they specialist in providing advice and information on broadband and naturally PCs and laptop computers.

The affordability brought into the laptop market through the broadband deals has made laptop and its cousins the notebooks extremely affordable and very popular with both children and adult. Having a laptop instead of a desktop computer makes working in limited space easy and carrying data and information from home to work or school even easier not to talk of playing games in your free time.

Laptops and your health

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy. After a long hard days work on your laptop, relaxing by playing your favourite game can be relaxing. One important caveat about using laptops is that you must not place it on your lap for too long despite the fact that its actually called a laptop.

The reason you should not place a laptop on your lap for too long ranges from strain to your posture to actually damage to the skin on your lap because of CPU extractor fan blowing hot air into your laps.

The journal Pediatrics reported the case of a 12-year-old who developed discoloured skin after playing games for hours on the laptop, developing a condition called erythema ab igne, which used to be common in people exposed to heat as part of their work, such as bakers, silversmiths and construction workers.

Once you acquire you free laptop with or without a broadband deal, remember not to use it on your lap for extremely prolonged period.

By January 2011, all hard drives must shift from the older 512 bytes blocks to 4K format as an agreement with Idema (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association). Although this change only means good news while producers will deliver more reliable and “greener” hard drives, for Windows XP users might become a problem.

For 30 years, developers format hard drives’ space into blocks sized 512 bytes, this method becoming a standard due to IBM which used it on FDDs. Using this standard was great when hard drives capacities where up to a small amount of megabytes, but lately producers can deliver hardware which seizes 1-2 terabytes and due to this old technology there are is lot of space loss.

Eight times less lost space – that is what producers say moving on to 4K sectors will mean, and also faster, more reliable and less power consuming drives.

Hard drive developers started a promoting campaign for educating people about this move to an advanced standard and to inform about possible conflict problems between this format and older OS like XP.
While Vista, Windows 7, Leopard, X Tiger are all aware about this 4K movement and are prepared to embrace this new technology, Windows XP hit the markets before this decision was taken. Although producers have discovered a method to help XP manage this new standard, performance will take a hit when writing data.

This new drives will simulate that are still using 512 bytes sectors so that when reading data this “trick” will go unobserved, yet when writing data a five milliseconds delay will emerge, producers say.

It is time that will show how this issue will be solved while a lot of Windows XP users are still using this operating system and might encounter problems when this standard will be fully embraced.

Another advantage with Windows 7 is its ability to run smoothly on net books. Vista was a bit too bulky to run on such laptops and Microsoft was losing ground rapidly to Linux. They seem to have corrected that with the launch of Windows 7 and you will find that despite a slow processor, it is able to run much faster than some of the high powered Vista desktops.

If you have the XP on your notebook and want to do an upgrade, then it is better to do a clean install along with the Easy Transfer process. The process will take just a bit more than an hour and there would be no compatibility problems. You can make use of an external DVD drive to load the Windows 7 DVD if you wish rather than the USB flash drive as it can be time consuming and would require a lot of involvement from you.

You will find that the installation is not only smooth but all applications and software along with set profiles, Mozilla passwords, Open office templates, extensions and user accounts are all in place and this is confirmed through the “Easy Transfer Report” of Windows 7.

Any other utilities such as the Samsung ones that have not yet been released along with Windows 7 can also be addressed through helpful hints on the internet. You will find that they work very smoothly and are much faster than XP. The only compromise would be on one hour of battery life. You can also replace the 1GB RAM of the net book with a 2GB one to enjoy a significant improvement.

It is now well known that the more you use Vista, the PC slows down over time. So if you want to upgrade to the Windows 7 on your desktop, you only need to use the Easy Transfer route along with the guidelines suggested by Microsoft as mentioned earlier in this article and you can have even your old PC springing back to new life with the Windows 7. You will notice that the start up is much faster and all old applications also start up and run better.

Broadly to summarise, Windows 7 has the following advantages:

1) It is easy for usage and much faster than Vista.

2) The “peek” along with the “taskbar preview” functions makes life much easier to locate things on very crowded desktops.

3) The search box option is pretty fast as compared to the Vista Google Desktop route in order to locate programs and documents.

4) It is much easier to transfer files between computers in the same location.

Do ensure though that you use the clean install route as it can benefit your old computer and lead to an improvement in your net book functioning. Windows 7 is compatible with many of the old hardware as well as software and that definitely gives it the edge at the moment.

c) Transition of the applications

Once the upgrade is done, all necessary applications will remain as they are. If you are opting for the clean install, then you need to make use of the original disks related to each application or the relevant file that you had downloaded from the internet the first time of that particular application. Some of the applications may be downloaded again from the internet and the advantage is that you will get the newest version. In other cases, you will need to keep the license numbers of the applications handy to prove that you are indeed the legitimate user of those applications.

d) Be prepared to allocate time for the process

Though the upgrade is a smooth process, it is the back ups and the transfer of files that is time consuming and there is nothing you can do to speed it up. If your internet connection is WI-FI enabled then you will do well to keep an Ethernet cable handy to be able to connect it into the modem if there is a need for the Wi-Fi card to have a fresh driver.

Though this appears to be a relatively simple process of just inserting the Windows 7 CD and wait for the process to take over, it is not that simple. The advisor anticipates possible problems with the printer drivers as well as with the Wi-Fi card that needs to be reloaded once the upgrade is complete and it therefore prompts you to uninstall the anti virus program, Open Office and the IntelliType Pro as well.

You can now do the back up and transfer everything important through the Easy Transfer facility to the external hard drive. Insert the Windows 7 disk and you will be faced with a second check about system compatibility. It will tell you to uninstall any iTunes and “de-authorise” the PC. Any toolbar applications like Google and other software running the ATI Radeon video card also need to be uninstalled till the upgrade is completed.

It is possible that the installation may apparently start and you would think that everything is smooth till you get a message saying that the upgrade was not done fully. This could be due to the Wi-Fi card and printers and it is better to make use of the Ethernet cable and do a wire line internet access to solve the Wi-Fi problem. You need not panic though as your earlier Windows version will be restored and everything will be as it was.

This roll back feature is thus a very good facility as it does not create any untoward damage to your system in the event of the up gradation failing due to any reason. Upgrade duration is also a function of any extra application or file that you may have on your PC when the upgrade is in progress and it is therefore important not to have any such surprises as it can prolong the process.

A successful upgrade ensures that all applications – whether freeware or not along with any device works perfectly. The different user accounts work fine and any settings that had been in place continue their functions seamlessly. The PC is now able to work much faster and applications do not take time to function. Moreover, you will no longer face crashes of the kind you had with the Vista.

The launch of Windows 7 is an exciting development and most of us would want to look at upgrading to it from the existing Windows Vista operating system. However, there are certain procedures that we need to follow so that the upgrade is smooth.

a) Is it possible to upgrade?

The first thing to check for is whether your computer is in a position to accept the new operating system. Microsoft has made available a tool referred to as the Windows 7 upgrade advisor which needs to be just downloaded and then installed. This tool does a good job of telling you whether your PC has the requisite hardware and software capability to run Windows 7. The tool also advises you where to fetch the necessary drivers. It would also prompt you to uninstall certain programs that may interfere with the upgrade process such as the anti virus program if any and ask you to reinstall the same once the upgrade is complete.

b) Back up procedure

As with any upgrade, you need to make sure that you have created sufficient back up of all important files and documents. The use of an external hard drive is recommended. Regular back ups are anyways advisable to protect your music, photos and other crucial data as hard disk failures are quite rampant and you would stand to lose everything in a jiffy if you have not taken care to take adequate back up precautions.

The good news is that external hard drives are becoming very affordable and you can now get more space than ever at much cheaper rates. In any case, buying one is always prudent and a good investment. Windows Vista provides a tool which facilitates such a back up including the saving of all files and other important settings related to the profile. All you need to do is link the external hard drive to the USB port. You are also free to use the back up tools that come with the hard disk and in case you are too particular and wish to play very safe, you are at liberty to take two back ups.

In case of a clean install process, you only need to make use of a utility tool called Easy Transfer. This is available in both the Vista and XP, so you can download as per your system requirement. Though the process is simple, it can take time. It prompts you to confirm for which version the application is required and then it is up to you to decide the files to be backed up.

Researchers have devised a penny-sized silicon chip that uses photons to run Shor’s algorithm – a well-known quantum approach – to solve a maths problem.

The algorithm computes the two numbers that multiply together to form a given figure, and has until now required laboratory-sized optical computers.

This kind of factoring is the basis for a wide variety of encryption schemes.

The work, reported in Science, is rudimentary but could easily be scaled up to handle more complex computing.

Shor’s algorithm and the factoring of large numbers has been a particular case used to illustrate the power of quantum computing.

Quantum computers exploit the counterintuitive fact that photons or trapped atoms can exist in multiple states or “superpositions” at the same time.

For certain types of calculations, that “quantum indeterminacy” gives quantum computers a significant edge.

While traditional or “classical” computers find factoring large numbers impracticably time-consuming, for example, quantum computers can in principle crack the problem with ease.

That has important implications for encryption methods based on factoring, such as the “RSA” method that is used to make transactions on the internet more secure.

Apple has confirmed that its new operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, will be released on 28 August.

Snow Leopard is one of Apple’s biggest operating system updates since the firm moved from the “Classic” OS in 2001.

Apple said the new operating system (OS) is almost half the size of previous versions, freeing up to 7GB of drive space once installed.

Snow Leopard is currently the number two best seller on Amazon.com and will retail at £25 in the UK ($29 in US).

The release had been slated for September but the firm announced the revised release date on Monday.

The new version updates on the old 10.5.8 Leopard OS and Apple say that its “support for 64-bit processors makes use of large amounts of RAM, increases performance and improves security while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications”.

“Snow Leopard builds on our most successful operating system ever and we’re happy to get it to users earlier than expected,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering.

Apple’s main thrust has been on improving the OS performance, rather than creating new features for the user.

The OS will also come with built-in support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 that Apple says will allow users to employ Snow Leopard’s mail, contacts, and calendar applications while accessing Windows-based network services.
